Happy Diwali (and a Giveway)!
Happy Diwali! Now, I’m sure most of you have no clue what I’m going on about, but let me tell you how I was kept up last night by the Diwali festivities. It was a night of listening to the MC alternate from English to Hindi in between traditional Indian music and Indian EDM. And let’s not forget the American pop music. Then there was the fireworks at midnight which scared poor George away. I think he hid under the bed for a good while before deciding it was safe to come out and then cuddled up to me all night. Bless! One of the things about Singapore is that the public holiday schedule is taken from the Hindu, Buddhist and Catholic religions. So today is a public holiday, but as per usual, I am slaving away at the office!
I had no idea what Diwali was until I moved here. Sure, I have Indian friends here and back in London, but in London we didn’t celebrate it. Or at least it wasn’t recognized in their holiday schedule. Since we do get a day off here, I have edumacated myself and in turn, I will pass on this knowledge. I always think it’s nice to know more about other religions and their customs.
Diwali is known as “The Festival of Lights” and signifies the victory of good over evil. The main night of celebrations take place when the darkest, new moon is out on the Hindu Lunisolar month where Hindus dress up in their newest and finest attire; light candles and lamps inside and outside of their homes; and participate in prayers to Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Afterwards, the skies are lit with fireworks and an exchange of gifts occur between family and close friends. I quite like the idea of this holiday….. Just saying!
But in any case, in the spirit of Diwali, I have teamed up with some fabulous bloggers for a little PayPay giveway. Now, every little helps, especially with the holidays around the corner! Get involved!!
Good luck!
